San Martin, CA (August 5th) The ASA Western States Supermodified Racing League
(WSSRL) saw Regier return to the winners circle while celebrated it's first
of five events under its new ASA sanctioning and debut on national television
with their title sponsor Go Fast Sports & Beverage Company. Events will
be televised on the Outdoor Life Network in partnership with the ASA Speed
Truck Challenge.
It's almost always expected of Troy Regier to win his races at the Madera
Speedway. Yearly there, he has been untouched in past races and Saturday
was no different as he won the "Al Pombo Classic" featuredthe legendary ASA
Western States Supermodified Racing League 410 Supermodifieds. Regier returned
to form to win the 75-lap main event. Once he took the lead after lap 10,
barring significant damage to his car, he was practically assured a win. |
It was quite contrary to his last race at the Speedway. Though it wasn't
an impostor driving Regier's signature powder blue car, it was a different
site that race fans were used to seeing Regier not winning. In that race
on May 6, Regier trailed the entire time and finished fourth. Reiger made
sure that would not happen again as he picked up his 61st career main event
win.
"It feels good to win again," Regier said. "Last time we were here, we weren't
ourselves. We tried to do stuff on the car, we were lucky to get fourth place
last time. Now we're back to our old selves.'
In the beginning of the race Regier, started near the back but quickly moved
to the front.
"Tonight was almost just easy," Regier said. "They gave me a super good car,
which made the passing so easy it was almost wrong."
The closest driver to catching Regier was Clovis' A.J. Russell. Regier had
saved enough fire power for the end and pulled away with 10 laps to go.
Like Regier, Russell was near the back of the race at the start. Russell
made it clear he wouldn't be back there for long and continued to climb up
the leader board and eventually got into Regier's rear view mirror.
"It was really pretty easy," Regier said. "I was cruising the whole race
and I saw him get into second, I saved my tires up to that point and turned
up the wick, I ran some fast laps and it was no sweat."
Just like last season when Regier easily won both of his races at Madera,
he jumped out to the early lead and was the chased car. He got out in front
of Eric Silsby and Kirk Wartman. On lap 26, a caution brought the cars back
together side by side. Regier was lined up with Silsby but continued his
strong hold on first place by getting solid take off on the restart. On lap
52, he started to lap a series of cars and stayed ahead until the finish
line. A.J. Russell came in second, while Silsby finished third.
Though Regier had thought of hanging up the helmet and calling it quits at
the end of last season, a new television deal now has him gunning for 100
wins. "My last five races will be televised on TV," Regier said. "It might
make this deal go big time. That might help get a big sponsorship from that
like the league."
