San Martin, CA (September 5th) The ASA Western States Supermodified Racing
League brought speed and excitement to the fans of Northern California's
Altamont Motorsports Park on September 2nd and to Utah's finest motorsports
complex, Rocky Mountain Raceway on September 4th. Dinuba's Troy Regier took
the wins of the Labor Day weekend although many of WSSRL's "Go Fast Sports
Drink" drivers showed the racing fans the horsepower of a historic supermodified.
The weekend also found an abnormal amount of mechanical challenges among
the racing machines and their totters.
Many
supermodified teams began their holiday weekend on Friday evening with an
Altamont practice. The league found the supers having trouble conforming
to the noise limitations established by the state and would prove to be a
challenge to overcome as the ethanol breathing machines registered 103 and
above on the DBA meter. The maximum DBA reading of the weekend would be a
shallow 95. Friday also saw an epidemic of engine failures by some of the
leagues first-class teams, including Out Front Racing. Cameron Motorsports
experienced valve train problems and "Rookie of the Year" contender, McKeefery
Racing had an engine meltdown. Teams worked through the night to bring the
85 and 24 ready for Saturday's showdown.
On Saturday, Altamont's half-mile monster saw Regier pilot his baby blue
rocket for a record setting lap of 14.993 seconds. The super fans saw Rick
Veenstra's 91 and A.J. Russell's 7 lead their way through the heats in
preparation for the feature. Fifteen cars would take the grid following pole
sitter Pat Whittit, except Whitey Jansen and Martin McKeefery who returned
to the pits after not firing. The initial lap would see the first of two
cautions and one red flag. At the checkered, the finish was Troy Regier,
Jeff Russell and Amy Barnes on the lead lap, Kirk Wartman and Bobby Dalton
at one lap down followed by Pat Whittit, Eric Silsby, and Ernie Coppo. Burges,
A. Russell, Veenstra, Cameron and Lamborn were unable to compete the race.
The ASA sanctioned WSSRL packed their monster machines and began their journey
to one of Utah's best racing facilities. Rocky Mountain Raceway's three-eight
mile paved oval played host to the "Go Fast Sports Drink" Supermodifieds
on Labor Day Monday. After a rocky travel, the S & S Mototrsports and
Burges Motorsports machines joined their teammates to field a twelve car
roadster
race.
On Monday, "the fastest cars in short track racing" drove the rocky roads
to RMR where the average speed of 100 mph thrilled the crowds. The recently
ASA sanctioned supermodifieds put on a great show with plenty of action with
only a few cautions. In the race's early going, Rick Veenstra started on
the pole and managed to hold the race lead till local racer Jimmy Waters
proved himself quite skillful at Super Modifieds, and was able to stay in
2nd place until Jeff Russel lap passed him on lap 25. Another driver becoming
well known at RMR is that of reining Champion Troy Regier who had the quickest
lap at 13.285 seconds. Regier travled through the field until the 42nd lap
with Veenstra, Jeff Russell, Jim Birges and Jim Waters rounding our the top
five.
"I'm worn out," commented Regier after the race. "We kept making
adjustments
.that was a tough race."
The ASA Western States Supermodified Racing League will continue their "Go
Fast Sports Drink" chase for the championship on Saturday, September 23rd
for the "Harvest Classic 100" at Madera Speedway featuring a Twin 50 lap
main event for the supers. |
