N. California Supermods
I decided to race Supermodifieds shortly after being a spectator at Mesa Marin in Bakersfield, California. From a fan’s perspective, I saw incredibly fast machines racing around the track at speeds that, up until then, I thought impossible. And today, nothing matches the adrenaline I feel every time I strap myself in.

My first race as a Supermodified pilot was at Madera Speedway, just outside Fresno, CA. My first thought was “What have I gotten myself into?” Accelerating out of a corner on the first lap, the “G” forces against my body were unimaginable. All my senses were on overload. My vision blurred from the vibration of accelerating. The deafening roar of 800 horsepower only inches in front of me drowned out all other sounds. I could see racers with huge wings and giant tires all around me racing corner to corner.

I thought I had experienced the ultimate in racing when I raced NASCAR earlier in my career. How wrong I was! A Supermodified is unlike any other racecar on the planet. Imagine accelerating from 20 to over 100 in less than 3 seconds, topping out at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour.

After 40 laps, it was over, and yet it wasn’t. I’ve been racing Supermodifieds for five years now and there’s no going back to anything else.

As president of the WSSRL, I am proud both as a fan and a driver to increase the popularity of this sport with more races and more promotion at more tracks with larger winners’ purses and greater recognition for my fellow drivers.
